In the lead up to the release of her debut album The River Doesn’t Like Strangers on October 22nd, saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael today releases her mystical new track, ‘Bone & Soil’ – listen here.

Kicking off simply with drums & bass, ‘Bone & Soil’ builds slowly to a crescendo of Chelsea’s soothing tenor saxophone melody. Of the track, Chelsea commented: “‘Bone and Soil’ is an ode to one of my favourite poems by Nayyirah Waheed, titled ‘melanin | Bone and Soil’ It reads: We write from the body. / It remembers everything.”

Engineered at London’s iconic RAK studios by Will Purton and recorded with Eddie Hick (Sons of Kemet), Dave Okumu (The Invisible) and Tom Herbert (The Invisible; Polar Bear),

The River Doesn’t Like Strangers from start to finish is jazz mastery at its finest. The title track was inspired by the words of Chelsea’s dad on the Rio Grande in Jamaica: the river that goes through the centre of his home village of Grants Level, in the parish of Portland.

“I feel that the way that I play on this record draws inspiration from the lineage of black music making and the Caribbean Diasporas,” Chelsea said of the album. “It only felt right to reference my own lineage, and what has always been inside me even before a saxophone was put in my hands.”

Originally from Warrington, Chelsea is a Conservatoire-trained musician who has already been part of a Mercury-nominated band – she played on SEED Ensemble’s 2019 Driftglass – and has recently laid down sax on Little Sims’ track ‘Point & Kill, as well as playing live with Kano.

She also currently plays with Theon Cross, the Neue Grafik Ensemble. Following a performance together in May 2019 at the Total Refreshment Centre-affiliated Church of Sound with South African band The Brother Moves, Shabaka noted Chelsea’s potential and invited her to record the first release on the new label.

“High and Lonesome” is the second preview of Raise The Roof, following lead single “Can’t Let Go,” a rendition of the Randy Weeks/Lucinda Williams classic that reaffirmed Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Plant and 27-time Grammy-winner Krauss as “one of the most critically adored odd couples of music” (USA Today). As NPR Music says, “This feels like a warm welcome back from two old friends you haven’t seen in a long time,” and across Raise The Roof, their voices “still fit together like a pair of dusty boots nestled atop a welcome mat” (New York Times).

Recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studios, sessions for Raise The Roof began in late 2019. “When we started, Robert had said that if it didn’t work, we’ll try it for three days and say goodbye,” explains Alison Krauss. But through a range of styles and traditions, she and Plant extended their collaboration in thrilling new directions, wrapping just weeks before the world went into lockdown. “One of my favorite parts of this is the songs and songwriters that I had never heard of,” Krauss continues. “Working with Robert, and with T Bone, is always a great education in musical history.”

The rest of Raise The Roof includes deep cuts by Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch, Calexico and more. “It’s such a far cry from everything I’ve done before,” says Robert Plant. “I love the whole kaleidoscope of music that I’ve explored, but this is a place where you can think within the song, you can decide how to bring home an emotion. It’s another blend that we’ve got, and long may we have more of them.”

On December 3 Depeche Mode will release a newly upgraded expanded definitive box set edition of 101 documentary concert film and live album chronicling the 101st and final performance of the band’s Music For The Masses world tour, recorded live at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on June 18, 1988.

A groundbreaking collaborative documentary, 101 was co-directed by acclaimed husband-and-wife filmmaking team D.A. Pennebaker (Dont Look Back) and Chris Hegedus (The War Room) with active creative input from Depeche Mode, who’d held an exclusive contest for fans offering an appearance in a Depeche Mode movie as the prize. 101‘s narrative through-line of contest winners traveling across America to attend Depeche Mode’s landmark Rose Bowl concert is a cinematic precursor to the youth culture trend in “reality tv” programming. Depeche Mode’s 101 captures the electrifying synergy between the band and their fans.

This new HD edition of 101: A film by D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, David Dawkins has been meticulously upgraded using 4k scans of the original film reels to create an all-new viewing experience. 

The 101 Blu-ray includes three previously unseen bonus performances of “A Question of Lust,” “Sacred” and “Something To Do” plus the official promotional video for “Everything Counts.”

Additional contents in the new, limited edition Depeche Mode 101 box set include: a 48 page behind-the-scenes story of the day photo book; a 20″ x 30″ replica of original US theatrical release movie poster; a 16 page Anton Corbijn Photo Mode book as featured in the original album release; a double CD of the original 20 track 101 concert release; and a Download Card providing access to 4K downloads of the film and bonus performances plus 24-bit audio files of the 101 concert release. The September 24, 1991 release of Nirvana’s Nevermind touched off a seismic shift in global youth culture. Rising to #1 worldwide over the next few months, its impact would elevate Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a promising Pacific Northwest cult band to one of the most successful and influential artists of all time. Nevermind returned rock ’n’ roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, and continues to be a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last three decades–as it no doubt will for generations to come.

Beginning November 12, 2021, Geffen/UMe commemorates the 30th anniversary of Nevermind with several multi-format reissues. A total of 94 audio and video tracks–70 previously unreleased–will be made available across configurations ranging from Super Deluxe Editions to standard digital/CD and single disc vinyl with bonus 7-inch. In all formats, Nevermind is newly remastered from the original half-inch stereo analog tapes to high-resolution 192kHz 24-bit.

Among the previously unreleased material exclusive to various versions of the Nevermind 30th Anniversary Editions are four complete live shows that document Nirvana’s historic ascension on the concert stage – Live in Amsterdam, Netherlands (recorded and filmed on November 25, 1991 at the famed club Paradiso); Live in Del Mar, California (recorded on December 28, 1991 at the Pat O’Brien Pavilion at the Del Mar Fairgrounds); Live in Melbourne, Australia for triple j (recorded February 1, 1992 at The Palace in St. Kilda); and Live in Tokyo, Japan (recorded at the Nakano Sunplaza on February 19, 1992).

Sir Rod Stewart’s rekindled love of songwriting grows stronger on his 31st studio album, THE TEARS OF HERCULES. It’s Stewart’s fourth new album of original songs since 2013 when he reconnected with his songwriting muse to record Time, the chart-topping album which entered the Top 10 in the US and ten countries worldwide, including #1 in the U.K., where it’s been certified platinum double-platinum. THE TEARS OF HERCULES is a project close to Stewart’s heart, especially the song “Touchline,” which he dedicated to his father, who taught him and his brothers to love football, a tradition Sir Rod has passed down to his sons. In the album’s sleeve note, Stewart says he’s proud of the album. “I’ve never said this before about any previous efforts, but I believe this is by far my best album in many a year,” he writes.

To make THE TEARS OF HERCULES, Stewart once again worked with Kevin Savigar, the keyboardist-songwriter-composer who has co-produced Stewart’s last three studio albums: Time (2013), Another Country (2015), and Blood Red Roses (2018). Their long-running collaboration began in 1978 when Stewart invited Savigar to join his studio and touring band. In addition to “One More Time,” they also co-wrote the standout tracks “Hold On” and “All My Days.” Stewart co-wrote “Born To Boogie (A Tribute To Marc Bolan)” with Emerson Swinford, the guitarist in his band. Stewart, Savigar, and Swinford share songwriting credit on “I Can’t Imagine.”

Stewart has always had a gift for making any song sound like it was written just for him. That’s certainly true of the album’s title track, a powerful ballad written by Marc Jordan. Through the years, Stewart has recorded other songs written by Jordan, including “Rhythm Of My Heart” (#5 U.S./#3 U.K.) from Vagabond Heart and “This” from his gold-certified album, A Spanner in the Works. Additional covers include Stewart’s joyful take on Soul Brother Six’s “Some Kind Of Wonderful,” and his stirring rendition of Johnny Cash’s “These Are My People.”

‘Transparency’ is Sam McTrusty spilling his guts on everything from marriage, male friendship and the absurdity of social media to parenthood, medication and his mum.  Written in strained circumstances and recorded remotely with Sam’s mate and mentor Jacknife Lee, the album arrived more by accident than design when the world went into lockdown last spring. ‘Young’ is a finger-pointing, post-Brexit rant at people who vote without considering the consequences. ‘Dirty’ is a piss-take of Sam himself, the singer in a band sipping Champagne who would have appalled his younger self. The Talking Heads-y ‘Dance Like Your Mother’ is about being in a rock band who want their fans to dance, and ‘Instigator’ deals with the pressure he feels as a frontman.

Sam says; “After the challenges put in front of everyone in 2020 and 21 I did what I’ve always done in moments of turmoil, stress or anxiety and started to write songs. It slowly evolved into an album and something we feel puts a new stamp on our band which really excites us.”

Off the back of his recent club-banger ‘1 Day 2 Nights’, HRVY returns with a video for his infectious pop powerhouse single Runaway With It. In the lead up to the release of the soundtrack for the smash musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, composed by Dan Gillespie Sells, Ivor Novello award-winning band The Feeling have announced a new chapter in their career with their sixth studio album, Loss. Hope. Love – out May 6th on Island Records – back where it all started in 2006 for their Top 3 debut album Twelve Stops and Home.

First taster from the new record is the brilliant ‘This Was Me’. Originally performed by Richard E. Grant and Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Holly Johnson for the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie soundtrack, The Feeling’s version from Loss. Hope. Self-produced, predominantly at their East London studio during lockdown, Loss. Hope. Love is the sound of a band who have reconsidered their identity, taken control of their sound and embraced the Queen-esque theatrical elements of their DNA, recently realised by the success of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. The Feeling return a whole new perspective. 15 years since their multi-million selling debut record Twelve Stops and Home – the new album is bursting with joy, but with the thread of melancholy that’s always been synonymous with their flawless songwriting.

After years of writing about his own life, Dan was keen to use his foray into musical theatre to tell other people’s stories. It’s also given the band time to work in a different way. Dan says: “It’s been a while but throughout writing the Musical, the West End Soundtrack then the Official Movie Soundtrack I have worked with the band and they have been a great help. It’s been great for all of us. It was The Feeling with a different hat on but we’re delighted to be back.”

Since the last Feeling album 5 years ago, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has quickly become one the most successful new musicals of the last decade. Premiering at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, before transferring to London’s Apollo Theatre, the production was an overnight success amongst audiences and critics, receiving rave reviews and garnering five Olivier Award nominations.

The Feeling first burst onto the English rock scene with the release of their UK Top 10 single ‘Fill My Little World’. 3 more hit singles from Twelve Stops and Home and by the end of 2006 The Feeling were the most played act on UK radio.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) have announced that they will release ‘Souvenir’, ‘Joan Of Arc’ and ‘Maid Of Orleans’, the international hit singles from their 1981 album, Architecture and Morality, on 12” vinyl on October 15th on UMC/EMI. The announcement follows their incredible ‘You Me & OMD’ livestream at London’s Indigo at The O2, which raised funds for the cast and crew whose livelihoods have been affected by Covid-19, 

Released in 1981, Architecture & Morality was OMD’s third genre defying studio album. Its iconic use of the Mellotron and choral samples resulted in international critical acclaim and has sold over four million copies worldwide. The three singles from the album, ‘Souvenir’, ‘Joan Of Arc’ and ‘Maid Of Orleans’, all reached the top 5 in the UK singles chart and sold a total of eight million copies combined. It was an album that further solidified OMD as the Kings of the synth-pop world. 

“The success of Architecture and Morality took us all by surprise,” Andy McCluskey commented. “Once again we had followed our raison d’être of changing musical style, but we seemed to have really hit upon a sound that resonated with a wide audience. The three singles ‘Souvenir’, ‘Joan of Arc’, and ‘Maid of Orleans’ all went top five in the UK. To this day they remain the “Holy Trinity” in the middle of our live stage performances and the audience reaction is always rapturous.”

Now, for the first time, the band will release the hits as three 12” singles on 45 rpm coloured vinyl. The vinyl contains a triple gatefold sleeve, silver-board & emboss detail as well as a download card and is available to pre-order now from HERE.

OMD will also embark on a UK arena tour in November, which will see the band perform songs from ‘Architecture & Morality’, plus many more from their legendary back catalogue. The tour will stop off at London’s Eventim Apollo, as well as two hometown shows at the Liverpool Empire and Olympia.

Having now completed his third full decade as a recording artist, The Divine Comedy, aka Neil Hannon, today announces the treasure trove that is Charmed Life – The Best Of The Divine Comedy – a collection of his finest moments, out February 4th 2022.

A 24 track career-spanning roster of hit singles and fan favourites, compiled by Neil and remastered at Abbey Road Studios, Charmed Life includes monumental tracks ‘National Express’, ‘Something For The Weekend’, ‘Songs of Love’, ‘Our Mutual Friend’, ‘A Lady of A Certain Age’, ‘To The Rescue’ and ‘Norman and Norma’. It also features brand new track ‘The Best Mistakes.’

“I’ve been luckier than most,” Neil Hannon reflected. “I get to sing songs to people for a living and they almost always applaud. So when asked what to call this collection I thought of Charmed Life. I like the song and it rather sums up how I feel about my life.”

The Best Of will arrive as a 24 track standard 2CD; double heavyweight black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve; limited edition double heavyweight colour vinyl in a gatefold sleeve; and as a limited edition 3CD edition containing the 24 track Best Of as well as “Super Extra Bonus Album” – a collection of new and unreleased recordings.

Discussing the bonus album, Neil continues: “It felt right to celebrate thirty years of The Divine Comedy. I can’t give you an overview of these songs. They’re a crazy mixed up bunch. Some are strangely seasonal, some relate to what we’ve all been going through recently, some are just nuts. Enjoy!”

In 1990 musical history was made when a 20 year old Neil Hannon signed his first record deal and began releasing one glorious album after another under the name The Divine Comedy. Twelve magnificent albums and hundreds of spellbinding shows later, Neil Hannon is now, without doubt, a national treasure and one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation.

The Divine Comedy will be touring the UK and Ireland from April 2022 including a show at the London Palladium on the 3rd of May.  Neil says: “I am so looking forward to playing live again. The last couple of years have been a reminder of how much it means to me personally. It really is my favourite thing. And it seems fitting that we’ll be coming back with a greatest hits set. Pearl Jam is celebrating the anniversaries of its seminal albums Ten and No Code, launched on the same day, 5 years apart. In the Fall of 1991, a period known as the
“60 days that changed rock,” there were epic album releases by artists Soundgarden, Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Pearl Jam with Ten. The band is asking fans to take to social media to share their memories of these iconic albums using the hashtags #30YearsOfTen and #25YearsOfNoCode. The campaign is a nostalgic look back to the nineties surfacing fan-lensed in-concert videos, behind-the-scenes photos, candid snapshots, ticket stubs, personal anecdotes about meeting the band. 

The Ten Club (Pearl Jam’s fan community) will present a free streaming event of the historic Moline, Illinois show (October 17, 2014) where Pearl Jam played No Code live from start to finish. Pearl Jam: The No Code Show, a Free Streaming Event begins Friday, August 27 at 5pm (PT) on the band’s YouTube channel and runs through Monday, August 30 at 11:59pm (PT). 

To further celebrate the anniversary, Epic Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, are releasing newly remixed state-of-the-art digital-only editions of Ten and No Code on Friday, August 27. 

Both the 30th anniversary digital edition of Ten and the 25th anniversary digital edition of No Code have been mixed by producer/sound engineer Josh Evans in state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio to provide listeners with an immersive sonic experience. Evans–who began working with the band as an assistant engineer and tech during the making of the eponymous Pearl Jam (aka the “Avocado” album) in 2006–produced 2020’s Gigaton, the first new Pearl Jam studio album in seven years, and deployed Dolby Atmos to bring listeners further into each song with more detail and nuance.

“These two albums sound amazing in the immersive format,” said Josh Evans. “For Ten, the goal was to create the best version of the record, bigger, wider and higher fidelity; now, it actually sounds as great coming out of your speakers as it does in your memory of hearing it the first time. 25 years ahead of its time, No Code almost sounds like it was intended to be an immersive album; experimental layers, nuance and raw aggression are all amplified and expanded in a simultaneously bigger and more intimate experience.”

Ten, Pearl Jam’s groundbreaking debut, was originally released on August 27, 1991. A phenomenal critical and popular success, Ten established Pearl Jam as avatars for a new generation of rock; propelled by the energy of hits like “Alive,” “Jeremy,” “Even Flow” and “Ocean,” the album peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified 13x Platinum by the RIAA.

August 27, 1996, marked the release of No Code, Pearl Jam’s fourth studio album. The third consecutive Pearl Jam album to enter the Billboard 200 at #1, the RIAA Platinum-certified No Code reinforced the band’s commitment to provocative musical exploration with songs like “Who You Are,” “Hail, Hail” and “Off He Goes.” The album enhanced the band’s reputation as international superstars as it hit #1 in Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Portugal and Sweden and Top 5 (or better) in Austria, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

On July 17, 2021, with 2021 marking the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s iconic debut album, Ten, Legacy Recordings and Record Store Day released special 12″ and cassette single editions of “Alive,” the track that kicked PJ into high gear. The 12″ features the original promo single version of “Alive” plus three rare B-sides: “Wash,” “Dirty Frank” and PJ’s cover of the Beatles’ “I’ve Got A Feeling,” currently unavailable anywhere else. All four tracks are included on side A while side B contains an etching of the band’s ‘Stick Man’ logo. The “Alive” cassette single is a replica of the promo cassette originally circulated at the time of Ten‘s release. It includes the promo single version of “Alive” plus “Wash” and “I’ve Got A Feeling,” repeated on both sides.

After a period out-of-print, Epic/Legacy released a new 12″ vinyl pressing of No Code on August 13th. This collector’s edition features the album’s original artwork and packaging with each album containing the same set of nine postcards (original pressings featured nine postcards randomly chosen from a complete set of 36).
